Every third weekend of June, the village of Hollum on Ameland comes alive with music and festivities during Muzikaal Bootwateren (Musical boat waters). This annual festival, organised since 2001, is a tribute to an old tradition surrounding the horse-drawn lifeboat and has grown into one of the most vibrant music festivals in the north of the Netherlands.
What can you expect during Muzikaal Bootwateren?
Music on every corner: Throughout the day, brass bands and (shanty) choirs fill the streets of Hollum with cheerful tunes, spread across various stages.
Historical tradition: The name "Bootwateren" refers to the old custom where the lifeboat crew was rewarded with two shots of liquor and a cigar after a successful rescue mission.
Horse-drawn lifeboat launch: On the Friday before the festival, the famous horse-drawn lifeboat is launched into the water – a spectacular sight you won’t want to miss.
Grand musical finale: In the late afternoon, all orchestras and choirs gather for a spectacular joint performance.
Lively party night: After a day full of music and tradition, the festivities continue in local pubs and restaurants, with live music and a festive atmosphere.
