Möchdijk - Observation point

The Möchdijk is a historic sand dyke between Hollum and Nes on Ameland. The dyke played an important role in holding the island together and is now a beautiful stretch of landscape to walk through.

What can you expect at the Möchdijk?
- Holding an island together: As early as 1807 a sand dyke was built across the sandbank between the dunes of Hollum and Nes, so that Ameland would not break in two. Just a year later the dyke was breached, and this happened several more times afterwards.
- Raised in 1850: In 1850 the dyke was raised further. This is the present Möchdijk, which runs west-southwest from the Nesserduinen.
- From dyke to dune: The wind has partly covered the dyke with sand, turning it into low dunes. Here, cultural history and nature are beautifully intertwined.
- Edge of the Hagedoornveld: North of the dyke lies the Hagedoornveld, with the Zwanewater Stuifdijk further on.
