Kwekerijbos - Nature

The Kwekerijbos is a forest of about 48 hectares northwest of Nes on Ameland. It lies in the Briksduinen, an old inland dune, and has a special history.

What can you expect in the Kwekerijbos?
- The cradle of Ameland's forests: In 1895 Rijkswaterstaat started a tree nursery here. The young pines from this nursery were used to plant the forests that were meant to protect the villages from salty wind and drifting sand.
- A clever planting method: Sowing worked poorly, as birds ate most of the seed. Young trees were therefore planted in a hole filled with wet peat, which held the water like a sponge. This method is still used today.
- A forest by the coast: Due to coastal erosion, the northern edge of the forest is now close to the sea. Salt and strong winds make life hard for the trees. Staatsbosbeheer clears dead trees and gives broadleaved trees such as rowan, birch, maple and bird cherry more space.
- Birds and orchids: Some 42 bird species breed in the forest. It is the only forest on the island where bullfinch and hawfinch occur regularly. Special plants also grow here, such as creeping lady's-tresses, lesser twayblade, broad-leaved helleborine and wild asparagus.
- Old nursery barn: The former nursery barn still stands in the middle of the forest, a tangible reminder of the start of the afforestation.
