Nesserbos - Nature

The Nesserbos lies on the north side of Nes, between the village and the dunes of Ameland. It is a lovely forest for a short walk or bike ride, with a surprising piece of history.

What can you expect in the Nesserbos?
- A protective forest: From the end of the 19th century, forests were planted on Ameland to protect the villages from salty sea winds and drifting sand. The Nesserbos is part of this planting.
- Hardy conifers: For Ameland's forests, mainly conifers were chosen that can withstand the harsh coastal climate, such as Austrian pine, Corsican pine and Sitka spruce. Thanks to thinning, broadleaved trees are now getting more and more space.
- The Kaapsduun: On the highest dune in the forest there used to be a ‘kaap’, a signal and lookout post called Weest op uw hoede (Be on your guard). From here, ships were warned of storms and dangerous weather.
- Close to the village: From Nes you are in the forest in no time, and via the Strandweg you quickly reach the North Sea beach.
Practical information
- Parking: You can park at the Strandovergang Nes car park and leave your bike there too.
- Combine with: To the west lies the Kwekerijbos, the former tree nursery of the island.
The Nesserbos is a green oasis right next to the village, ideal for a peaceful walk through the nature of Ameland.
Furthermore Nesserbos is near the following sights: Kaapsduun (±225 m), Ameland Nature Center (±950 m), Recreational area De Vleijen (±1,0 km), Outdoor Ameland (±1,1 km) & Mill de Phenix (±1,2 km).
