Oostbos - Nature

The Oostbos lies on the north side of Buren, the easternmost village on Ameland. It is a quiet forest, perfect as a green start to a trip to the dunes and the beach.
What can you expect in the Oostbos?
- A protective forest: From the end of the 19th century, forests were planted on Ameland to protect the villages from salty sea winds and drifting sand. By around 1950 there was forest on the north side of every village, including Buren.
- Coniferous forest with room for broadleaves: Mainly conifers that can withstand the harsh coastal climate were chosen for these forests. Thanks to thinning, broadleaved trees in Ameland's forests are gradually getting more space.
- Peace and quiet: The Oostbos is less well known than the larger forests on the island, so walks here are often wonderfully quiet.
- Gateway to the dunes: From the forest you walk straight into the Buurderduinen, with the Bureblinkert viewpoint.
Practical information
- Access: The forest is easy to reach from the village on foot or by bike.
