’t Wastuuntje - Observation point

The rest and viewpoint ’t Wastuuntje is a small, atmospheric stopping point in the eastern part of Ameland. You will find this peaceful spot where the Kooioerdstuifdijk meets the Stuifdijkpad, along the route towards the ’t Oerd nature area.

What can you expect at ’t Wastuuntje?

• Views over Nieuwlandsreid: From ’t Wastuuntje you look out across the open salt marshes of Nieuwlandsreid. This extensive nature area lies between the Kooiduinen and ’t Oerd and forms a beautiful transition between dunes, salt marshes and the Wadden Sea.
• Peaceful stop during a cycle ride or walk: ’t Wastuuntje is not a major tourist attraction, but exactly the kind of lovely Ameland spot where you naturally stop for a moment. Take a seat on a bench, enjoy the silence and let the wide-open landscape sink in.
• Salt marsh landscape towards the Wadden Sea: The view towards the Wadden Sea is open and spacious here. Depending on the season, the weather and the water level, the landscape always looks different. Sometimes green and lush, sometimes rougher and more saline in character.
• Birdwatching: The salt marshes of Nieuwlandsreid attract many birds. They forage, rest or fly on towards the mudflats. For bird lovers, this is therefore a beautiful place to pause for a while. Bringing binoculars is definitely worthwhile.
• Beautiful light in the morning and evening: Especially in low sunlight, for example early in the morning or towards evening, the landscape here comes wonderfully to life. The dunes, salt marshes and sky then combine to create a true Wadden landscape.

A small viewpoint with plenty of Ameland atmosphere

Precisely because ’t Wastuuntje is so simple and peaceful, it fits perfectly with this part of Ameland. No crowds, no major facilities, just a bench, an open horizon and views over a special nature area.

Here you can really sense how the dunes gradually give way to Wadden nature. On one side are the drift dykes and dunes, while on the other the landscape opens out towards Nieuwlandsreid and the Wadden Sea.

• Along a popular cycling route: ’t Wastuuntje lies on a popular route towards ’t Oerd. The cycle path along the Kooioerdstuifdijk and the Stuifdijkpad is a lovely way to discover the quiet eastern side of Ameland.
• Tip: Combine ’t Wastuuntje with a visit to the Kooiduinen, the Kooiplaats, the Nassaukooi and a longer cycle ride or walk towards ’t Oerd.
