Roosduinen - Nature

The nature area Roosduinen (Rose Dunes) is located near Ballum on Ameland and is a beautiful place for anyone who wants to experience the island in a peaceful and natural way. The area covers about 83 hectares and lies between the village, the Ballumerbos, the inner dune edge and the route towards the beach.
What can you expect in the Roosduinen?
Varied dune landscape: The Roosduinen are known as the largest continuous inland dune area of the Wadden Islands. Here, you walk through low inland dunes, wet dune valleys, heathland, grassland, small wooded areas and open dune landscapes.
- Peaceful walking area: This is not a busy attraction, but rather a lovely place for a relaxing walk. The area feels quiet and spacious, with beautiful views towards dunes, polders and woodland.
- Birds and nature: Many bird species can be found in the Roosduinen. With a bit of luck, you may spot birds of prey, songbirds or owls such as the short-eared owl and long-eared owl. It is especially interesting for nature lovers during the breeding season. Please make sure to stay on the paths then.
- Beautiful in every season: In spring, you hear many birds, in summer the area is fresh green, and in late summer the heath turns purple in some places. After rain, parts of the wet dune valleys can be boggy, so sturdy shoes are useful.
Easy to combine: The Roosduinen are close to the Ballumerbos and the beach access of Ballum. A walk through the area can therefore easily be combined with a visit to the beach or a stroll through Ballum.

Accessibility: The car park on the Verbindingsweg between Nes and Ballum is a good starting point.
- Boswachterspad route: A recommended option is the Boswachterspad Roosduinen and Landweerdijk by Staatsbosbeheer. This walking route is about 7 km long and leads through dunes, woodland and meadows between Ballum and Nes.

The Roosduinen are ideal for tourists who want to see more than just the beach and the village. Thanks to the combination of dunes, woodland, heathland, grassland and wet valleys, you quickly get a good impression here of the varied nature of Ameland.
