Ballumerbos - Nature

The Ballumerbos (Ballumer Forest) is a small and peaceful nature area near Ballum, roughly in the middle of Ameland. The forest covers about 40 hectares and is a lovely place for a short walk, a relaxing cycling break or an outing with children.
What can you expect in the Ballumerbos?
Small but atmospheric woodland area: The Ballumerbos is not a large and dark forest, but a manageable nature area with sheltered paths, open spaces and lovely transitions into dunes and polder landscape. That is exactly what makes it feel peaceful and accessible.
- Right next to the Roosduinen: The forest lies close to the Roosduinen, the largest continuous inland dune area of the Wadden Islands. This makes it easy to combine a walk through the forest with low dunes, heathland, grassland, wet dune valleys and wide views.
- Krûmeltjesspoor for children: For children, the Krûmeltjesspoor is especially recommended. This playful walking route of about 2 kilometres runs through the Ballumerbos and allows young children to discover fantasy figures and little surprises along the way.
- Lovely walking combinations: From the Ballumerbos, you can easily walk towards the Landweerdijk and the Roosduinen. Here, the landscape quickly changes from forest to open inland dunes and polder, so in a short time you can experience many different sides of Ameland.
Ballumer Blinkert nearby: Also nearby is the Ballumer Blinkert, a high dune with lovely views over the dunes, the woodland area and the Wadden Sea. In clear weather, you can sometimes even spot the ferry in the distance.
