Hollumer Forest - Nature

The Hollumerbos (Hollumer Forest) is located on the western side of Ameland, close to the village of Hollum. It is a wonderfully varied nature area with winding woodland paths, dunes, sandy tracks, play areas and open spaces where you immediately feel the island atmosphere.

What can you expect in the Hollumerbos?

• Forest, dunes and beach close together: The Hollumerbos is a lovely mix of nature. You can walk or cycle through the greenery, head into the dunes and easily extend your route towards the Westerstrand.
• Bornrif Lighthouse: An important landmark in the forest is the famous red-and-white lighthouse of Ameland.
• Great for families with children: There is a surprising amount to do in and around the forest. This makes the Hollumerbos not only a walking and cycling area, but also a lovely destination for a relaxed afternoon with children.
  • Natural play area: In many places, the Hollumerbos feels like one large natural playground. Sandy paths, little hills, tree trunks and dune edges invite children to run, climb and explore.
  • Play route Het Verdwenen Spoor: In the forest, there are several play locations that refer to the history of Hollum and Ameland. Children can climb in a lighthouse, play in an old lifeboat, discover the life of a whaler and beachcomb near a washed-up wreck. These are the locations:
    - the Jutters playground
    - the Hollumerbos playground
    - and the Sier aan Zee playground.
  • Gnome village and duck pond: For younger children, the gnome village and the duck pond are lovely stops along the way.

• Location: The Hollumerbos is located near Hollum, on the western side of Ameland, in the immediate surroundings of the Bornrif Lighthouse.
• Starting point for walks: From the Hollumerbos, you can easily walk or cycle towards the Hollum dunes and the western beach of Ameland.

The Hollumerbos is an ideal place for a short walk, a playful afternoon with children or a relaxing stop during a cycling trip around Hollum. The combination of forest, dunes, beach, play areas and the lighthouse makes this one of the nicest nature spots on Ameland.
