Kooiduinen - Nature

The Kooiduinen nature area lies on the eastern side of Ameland, directly east of the village of Buren.

What can you expect in the Kooiduinen?

It is a beautiful and peaceful area where dry dunes, damp dune valleys, salt marshes and open Wadden scenery alternate.

• Varied landscape: The Kooiduinen form a beautiful transition area between dunes and salt marshes. During a walk you will see dry sandy dunes, lower damp areas, flower-rich dune valleys and saltier salt-marsh-like vegetation.
• Special plants and birds: Thanks to the variety in the landscape, all kinds of plants grow here that are typical of dunes, wet low-lying areas and salt marshes. It is also a lovely place for birdwatchers, as many birds are especially fond of these quiet transition areas.
• Peaceful walking: The Kooiduinen are ideal for anyone who wants to get away from the crowds for a while. From the area around Buren and Kooiplaats, you can enjoy beautiful short walks. A well-known route is the Kooiduinen rondtocht of about 5.5 kilometres.
• Historic duck decoy: Close to the area lies the historic Nassaukooi, an old duck decoy near Kooiplaats. In the past, ducks were caught here; today it is mainly a special place with plenty of history and a sheltered, green atmosphere.
• Starting point at ’t Koaikers Huus: On the edge of the area lies ’t Koaikers Huus, at Kooiplaats 6 in Buren. This is a well-known resting point and a convenient start or end point for a walk through the Kooiduinen.
• Combine with Nieuwlandsreid and ’t Oerd: The Kooiduinen connect beautifully with the open salt-marsh area of Nieuwlandsreid and, further on, with the Oerd nature area. This makes this part of Ameland perfect for a longer walk towards the wilder eastern side of the island.

A quiet side of Ameland

The Kooiduinen are less well known than the beach, the lighthouse or ’t Oerd, but that is exactly what makes the area so appealing. Here you experience Ameland from its peaceful side, with wind blowing through the marram grass, wide-open views and plenty of space for birds and nature.
