Het Baken - Monument

Anyone heading towards the nature areas the Oerd and the Hôn will spot this wooden sea mark rising above the open landscape from far away.
What makes The Beacon special?
The Beacon is one of the most striking landmarks in the eastern part of Ameland.
- Historic landmark for navigation: The Beacon was placed in the 1950s as a point of reference for seafarers. Seen from the sea, the marker helped with navigation along the dynamic coast of Ameland.
- Monitoring the tidal inlet: The wooden sea mark was also used to monitor changes in the tidal inlet between Ameland and Schiermonnikoog. Especially after the reclamation of the Lauwerszee, currents, sandbanks and channels in this area changed considerably.
- Striking shape: The Beacon has a pyramid shape with four wooden poles. At the top are octagonal boards, making the structure clearly visible from different directions.
- From sand to concrete: Originally, The Beacon stood loose in the sand. As the structure began to sink, a concrete foundation was later added to make it more stable.
- A well-known point for walkers: Today, The Beacon is especially popular as a distinctive point during walks through the eastern dune area. It fits beautifully into the rugged landscape of sand, dunes, salt marshes and endless views.
Views across the nature: Around The Beacon, you look out over the open eastern part of Ameland, with sand flats, dunes and the horizon in the distance. It is a lovely place to pause for a moment and take in the wide landscape.
A piece of maritime heritage in nature
The Beacon is not a lighthouse, but it is still a special reminder of the maritime history of Ameland. The simple wooden structure tells the story of seafaring, coastal change and the constant influence of wind, water and sand on the island.
