Hollumer Dunes - Nature

The Hollumerduinen (Hollumer Dunes) form a varied dune area of about 156 hectares on the western side of Ameland, north of Hollum, near the lighthouse, holiday park Boomhieke and the Hollumerbos.
What can you expect in the Hollumerduinen?
It is a beautiful area for walking, getting some fresh air and discovering the western part of the island in a peaceful way. Varied dune landscape: Here you walk through high dunes, open dune valleys, sandy paths, marram grass and sheltered woodland edges. Along the way, you regularly get lovely glimpses towards the sea.
- Birds and animals: In the dunes, you may come across rabbits, pheasants and wheatears, among other things. Along the woodland edges, you often hear birds such as chiffchaffs, tree pipits, chaffinches, blackbirds and robins, while towards the beach you may spot gulls, sandpipers and other coastal birds. Especially early in the morning and towards the evening, there is a good chance of seeing more animals and experiencing the dune landscape at its very best.
Engelsmanduun: A well-known spot in this area is the Engelsmanduun, a high dune with views over the surroundings. In clear weather, you can enjoy beautiful views over the dune landscape and out towards the sea.
- Walking through dunes and forest: The Hollumerduinen connect beautifully with the Hollumerbos. This makes it easy to combine a walk with a route through the forest, past the Duck Pond, the Gnome Village or one of the play areas.
Lighthouse as a landmark: The red-and-white lighthouse of Ameland rises above the landscape in many places. During a walk, it provides a lovely photo opportunity time and again. Beach nearby: From the Hollumerduinen, you can easily continue walking towards the beach. That way, you combine dunes, forest and sea in one relaxing outing.
