Ballumer Blinkert - Observation point

The Ballumer Blinkert is a lovely dune top near Ballum, on one of the narrowest parts of Ameland.
What can you expect at the Ballumer Blinkert?
It is not a busy attraction with facilities, but rather a peaceful spot where you can pause during a walk or cycle ride for a beautiful view across the island.
Beautiful views over Ameland: From the top, you look out over the surrounding dunes, the woodland area, the open landscape around Ballum and the Wadden Sea. In clear weather, you can sometimes even spot the ferry sailing in the distance.
- Flora and fauna: Around the Ballumer Blinkert, you will find a varied dune landscape with marram grass, dune shrubs, wet dune valleys and open sandy stretches. In this area, you may come across various birds, such as the curlew, eider duck, avocet and, with a bit of luck, even a hen harrier.
A real island feeling: Precisely because Ameland is so narrow here, you can clearly see how special the landscape is. On one side lie dunes, beach and the North Sea, and on the other side the mudflats and the peaceful polder areas.- A dune with a fitting name: The name Blinkert suits the landscape well. On the Wadden Islands, a blinkert often refers to a striking dune of light-coloured sand that seems to shine in the sunlight.
Height: The Ballumer Blinkert now lies about 15 metres above sea level. In the past, the dune was higher, but during the Second World War it was lowered by about five metres because of the construction of bunkers.
- A lovely stop for walkers and cyclists: The surroundings of the Ballumer Blinkert are ideal for those who enjoy quiet walks or cycle rides. Various paths wind through the dune area and along woodland edges, making it easy to combine this spot with a route around Ballum, the Ballumerbos or the beach.
Practical information
- Accessibility: The dune top is best reached by bicycle. By car, you can park at the Ballumerbos. From that car park, it is still about a 2.5-kilometre walk to the Ballumer Blinkert.
Combine with: Make it into a lovely route past the Ballumerbos, the dunes, the beach of Ballum and, if you like, the Ballumerbocht on the Wadden Sea side.
The Ballumer Blinkert is not a major sight with cafés or play equipment, but a natural viewpoint where you can truly experience the peace, space and character of Ameland. Especially in clear weather, with low sunlight or after a walk on the beach, it is a lovely place to stop for a photo or a quiet moment to enjoy the view.
Furthermore Ballumer Blinkert is near the following sights: Ballumerbos (±1,5 km), Roosduinen (±1,5 km), Swimming Pool De Schalken (±1,8 km), Zwanewater Stuifdijk (±1,8 km) & Ballumerbocht (±1,9 km).
