Lange Duinen - Nature

The Lange Duinen form a special dune and marsh area just north of Hollum on Ameland. Here you will discover a landscape that is constantly changing, with reed beds, dune lakes and rich birdlife.

What can you expect in the Lange Duinen?
- An old foredune: The Lange Duinen are an old row of dunes running from west to east. For a long time they formed the sea defence of this part of the island.
- A landscape on the move: A new beach ridge has formed to the northwest. Between that beach ridge and the row of dunes lies a lagoon, and behind it a young dune valley with marshes and freshwater lakes.
- Fen and reeds: In the west of the area lies a fen with extensive reed beds. It is an important breeding area for reed birds; in 1987 as many as 264 pairs of sedge warblers were counted here.
- Birdwatching: From the Lange Duinen bird hide on the edge of a dune lake, with a bit of luck you will see marsh harrier, great crested grebe, little grebe or water rail. In winter the smew is also a familiar visitor.
Practical information
- Access: The area can only be reached on foot or by bike, via wide and easy paths.
- Walking: The forest ranger's trail takes you through the Hollumerduinen and the Lange Duinen. A handy starting point is the car park on the Oranjeweg in Hollum.
