Ballumerbocht - Observation point

The Ballumerbocht is located on the peaceful Wadden Sea side of Ameland, close to Ballum. It is not a large tourist viewing platform, but rather a simple and atmospheric spot on the dyke.

What can you expect at the Ballumerbocht?

Perfect for those who enjoy silence, wide views, birds and the ever-changing landscape of the Wadden Sea.

• Views over the Wadden Sea: From the dyke, you can enjoy lovely views over the Wadden Sea. Because of the tides, the landscape is constantly changing. One moment you are looking out over water, and the next over exposed mudflats and sandbanks.
• A great place for birdwatchers: The Ballumerbocht is especially interesting at low tide. That is when many wading birds search for food on the exposed mudflats. Here you can spot, among others, oystercatchers, plovers, curlews, sandpipers and terns. Bringing binoculars is certainly recommended.
• A peaceful stop during a cycling trip: The Ballumerbocht is a pleasant place to stop for a while during a cycling trip along the southern side of Ameland. In a westerly wind, this spot is often a little more sheltered.

The Dyke Watchers at the Ballumerbocht

• The Dyke Watchers: By the dyke stands the bronze sculpture De Dijkwachters by sculptor Frans Ram. The statue shows two rescue workers linked together by a rope, looking out over the Wadden Sea.
• A reminder of coastal defence: The dyke along the southern side of Ameland protects the island from the waters of the Wadden Sea. Especially during storms and extremely high water, in the storm season from October through March, vigilance is important.
• Plaque: The plaque beneath the sculpture reads:
  "Even when the storm drives the waves
  sometimes fearfully high,
  The dyke watcher stands ready
  with a watchful eye."
• Dyke raised to Delta height: The sculpture was placed in 1991, on the occasion of the completion of the final dyke section on Ameland that was raised to Delta height. It symbolises vigilance, cooperation and the ongoing battle against the water.

Practical information

• Best time to visit: Low tide is the best moment to visit the Ballumerbocht. That is when parts of the mudflats fall dry and there are often many birds to see.
• Lovely to combine with: A visit to the Ballumerbocht can easily be combined with the Ballumer Blinkert or a walk towards the village of Ballum.

For walkers, cyclists and nature lovers, this is a peaceful and lovely stop on the southern side of Ameland.
